With the launch of Mauro Medical Specialists, Leonard Bokhorst (radiation oncologist and co-founder) and Diederik Visser (director and co-founder) are introducing an innovative service for people with cancer. Mauro offers personalized, ongoing support from a medical specialist, in addition to standard hospital care. The initiative addresses the growing need for peace of mind, clarity, and personalized guidance during the often complex treatment process, as well as when treatment is no longer being administered or has been discontinued.
Need for support between hospital appointments
A cancer diagnosis has a profound impact and brings with it uncertainties and difficult decisions. According to co-founder Leonard Bokhorst, there isn’t always enough time or space within the conventional healthcare system for in-depth discussions about treatment options, personal boundaries, and alternatives:

Not just a second opinion, but ongoing support
Diederik Visser, co-founder, emphasizes that Mauro is not a replacement for the treating physician, but rather a complement: “We don’t offer a one-time second opinion, but rather ongoing support. Patients face multiple choices along the way. That’s why it’s valuable to have someone by their side throughout the process who is medically independent and can help them make well-informed decisions.”

Private healthcare with a social mission
Mauro currently offers his services on a private basis. The founders hope to partner with health insurers in the future: “There is a great need for this type of support,” says Visser. “We invite health insurers to discuss reimbursement with us.”
Driven by innovation in healthcare
Bokhorst and Visser met through an innovation program at UMC Utrecht. They had previously co-founded the startup MIAMAP, which focuses on applying AI in healthcare. They are now applying that experience to their mission with Mauro:
