Good care doesn't stop with chemotherapy or radiation therapy
Mauro: Your Personal Oncologist for Cancer
With Mauro Medical Specialists, Leonard Bokhorst and Diederik Visser are introducing an innovative service for people with cancer. Mauro offers continuous, personalized support from a medical specialist, in addition to standard hospital care. In this interview, Leonard and Diederik explain why they started Mauro, how it benefits patients and healthcare providers, why Mauro is unique, and what drives them.
Why Mauro?
Leonard:
“A cancer diagnosis completely turns a person’s life upside down. The future becomes uncertain, and at the same time, important treatment decisions must be made—often while patients are still grappling with countless questions. Such as: Am I receiving the right treatment? Are there alternatives? How far am I actually willing to go with treatment? How can I cope with cancer mentally, physically, and emotionally, apart from the medical treatments at the hospital? Within conventional healthcare, there isn’t always time or space to really discuss such questions properly. I see this not only in my office, but also in my own circle when friends or family reach out to me after a diagnosis.’
Diederik:
“Patients don’t necessarily need more information; anyone can look things up or ask ChatGPT. But there is a need for someone with expertise who can walk through that information with you. Someone who helps distinguish between fact and fiction, whether it concerns conventional treatments, alternative therapies, or lifestyle.”
People have to make decisions that can have far-reaching consequences. That’s why it’s valuable to have an independent medical specialist involved. Of course, there’s always the option of a second opinion, but that’s often a one-time thing. Yet when you’re dealing with cancer, you’re constantly faced with new choices. Moreover, care goes beyond treatment alone. Just as important is the question of how to cope with cancer.
What exactly does Mauro do?
Leonard:
“Mauro is your personal oncologist who takes the time to listen. He’s someone who listens, answers your questions, and helps you make informed decisions about your treatment and how to cope with cancer. We firmly believe that good care goes beyond simply treating cancer; it’s about supporting the patient’s overall well-being—physically, mentally, and emotionally.”
Diederik:
“We’re easy to reach, take the time to listen, explain complex medical information, and actively work with you to find solutions. This is especially true during the periods between hospital appointments, but also if you’re not receiving treatment (anymore) or have decided against it.”
Are you guys like personal physicians?
Diederik:
“We hear that a lot, and in a way, it’s true. We are your trusted medical guide who supports you every step of the way—someone who knows your situation inside and out. But we don’t take over from your primary care physician. We provide complementary care, not a replacement.”
Leonard:
“It is precisely that personal connection, combined with our specialized knowledge, that makes Mauro special.”
Leonard Bokhorst (radiation oncologist and co-founder)
What are the benefits?
Leonard:
“Our goal is simple: to ensure that patients feel they are making the right choices and have explored all relevant options, with knowledge, confidence, and peace of mind.”
Diederik:
“We support people with cancer outside the hospital setting, as a supplement to existing care. Our role is advisory: we help patients understand medical information, weigh treatment options, and ask specific questions. In doing so, we also relieve the burden on general practitioners and specialists, and strengthen patients’ confidence in their treatment plan.”
Who are Mauro's doctors?
Diederik:
“Our team consists of experienced and empathetic radiation oncologists and medical oncologists, supplemented by a specialized cancer researcher. They combine their work at Mauro with roles at hospitals or research institutes, bringing with them up-to-date knowledge, experience, and a strong network. They understand exactly what patients are going through and support them with compassion and expertise.”
Are Mauro's services covered?
Diederik:
“At the moment, we only offer our services on a private basis. However, our goal is to eventually make this support accessible to everyone. We therefore warmly invite health insurers to discuss (partial) reimbursement with us. The need is great.”
Diederik Visser (Director and Co-Founder)
How does it work in practice?
Leonard:
“The patient remains under the care of the hospital physician. We do not take over that care. Our support runs parallel to the hospital treatment plan. The patient remains in control; we serve in an advisory capacity. With the patient’s consent, we request medical records and begin a comprehensive intake process. Sessions take place at the patient’s home or at one of our locations. It’s all about a personalized approach. We adapt to the patient, not the other way around.”
What motivates you personally?
Leonard:
“For me, it’s very simple: I want to provide the best care. Healthcare in the Netherlands is good, but there’s room for improvement. Especially in those moments when there’s no scheduled hospital appointment, but there’s still a need for consultation and personal guidance.”
Diederik:
“Leonard and I met during an innovation program at UMC Utrecht. We share a passion for healthcare innovation and making a social impact. Previously, we co-founded the startup MIAMAP, through which we tried to make AI models clinically applicable in hospitals. That turned out to be too early at the time. But with the knowledge and experience we gained there, we’re convinced that we can now make a difference with Mauro Medical Specialists.’
