Frequently Asked Questions

  • During a phone consultation with us, you will choose one of our initial programs. We will then collect and analyze your medical information, with your consent. Depending on the program you choose, we will thoroughly review your medical situation or address any questions regarding lifestyle and supplemental care.

  • An initial consultation with Mauro can take place within two weeks, and sometimes sooner. To ensure a thorough intake, it is essential that we have access to your complete medical records. This depends on how quickly your healthcare provider can provide them. We therefore kindly ask you to fill out the required authorization form as soon as possible and submit it to us.

  • No, we do not perform treatments ourselves, conduct physical examinations, or prescribe medication. We act solely as independent medical specialists, working in conjunction with your attending physician at the hospital.

  • At the hospital, you will receive a one-time (written) reassessment of your medical condition, supplemented in some cases by a one-time consultation. At Mauro Medical Specialists, we have deliberately chosen a different approach (Second Opinion Plus). We offer not only an expert reassessment of your medical situation at the outset, but also personal guidance throughout your entire journey. Not just a one-time consultation, but a committed partner who stands by your side every step of the way. Literally, if you wish, right in your own home. Why? We believe that a second opinion is not just about medical content, but also about time, attention, and explanations in language you can understand. It’s about having someone who listens to you, thinks along with you, and helps you throughout your entire care journey to make choices you fully trust and that are right for you. And all of this in a setting where you feel comfortable.

  • No, our services are not currently covered by insurance. Since our founding, we have deliberately chosen to operate as a private practice, as the current healthcare system does not yet provide an appropriate framework for our specific type of care. We aim to have (parts of) our services covered by insurance in the future. If you have any questions about this, please contact us or your health insurance provider.

  • The collaboration between a client and Mauro typically begins with the client booking the Medical Concierge Initial Consultation. The cost of this consultation will be billed immediately upon the client’s approval.

After the Medical Concierge Initial Consultation, you and Mauro will choose one of the two Medical Concierge subscription plans.

Invoices are issued on the first day of each month and cover the services provided during that month.

You may cancel with one month's notice, effective at the end of the first month.

  • By signing this formal authorization, you are giving Mauro permission to request your medical records from the hospital where you received treatment. Once we receive this authorization, we will contact the relevant institution directly to obtain your records.

  • All specialists affiliated with Mauro are fully registered with the BIG and combine their work for our practice with an active role at a clinical or university hospital. We apply strict criteria in the careful selection of our specialists: they stand out for their excellent communication and empathy skills, possess in-depth expertise in their field, and are characterized by a critical mind willing to look beyond the most obvious or initial options.

  • We’d be happy to. Mauro understands that your illness has a significant impact not only on you personally, but also on your loved ones. That’s why Mauro provides guidance and support to both you and your loved ones.

  • Mauro is an independent medical advisor, not a treatment center. We therefore act as an extension of the hospital for patients who need additional personalized advice and guidance. This allows you to confidently make the treatment choices that are best for you.

  • Mauro focuses on providing you with the best possible treatment. Proven complementary care and lifestyle changes can potentially play a positive role in this. We believe that patients benefit from professional support from a Mauro medical expert who helps distinguish between fact and fiction, between hope and reality.

  • Mauro focuses on finding the best possible treatment for you, taking into account options abroad and the latest scientific findings. While this treatment is usually available in the Netherlands, there are some cases where it is not. If you have any questions about a specific treatment abroad, we can provide you with detailed advice.

  • We embrace evidence-based developments in the field of integrative oncology. In addition to conventional medical treatments, we can also provide you with information about lifestyle and proven complementary care, such as acupuncture and mind-body techniques. These complementary approaches are designed to promote your overall well-being, alleviate symptoms, and strengthen the resilience of your body and mind. Our team of specialists works with you to develop a comprehensive approach, so that you feel supported and stronger throughout your care journey.

  • Privacy and discretion are core values of our services. Mauro complies with the guidelines for information security and privacy legislation in the healthcare sector. For more information, please see our privacy statement.

  • Mauro treats all types of cancer, including prostate cancer, breast cancer, and lung cancer.

  • The name "Mauro" in Mauro Medical Specialists is inspired by Fra Mauro, a 15th-century monk who is considered the creator of the precursor to the modern world map as we know it today. Just as Fra Mauro mapped the world in his time, Mauro Medical Specialists today serves as a guide for cancer patients in the complex healthcare landscape, helping them find their way to the right treatment and care.
