Is cancer hereditary?
What You Need to Know About Heredity and Cancer
Many people wonder: is cancer hereditary? The answer isn’t black and white. In some cases, heredity plays a clear role, but in most situations, cancer is caused by other factors. Still, it’s good to know when heredity might be a factor—and what you can do about it.

When is cancer hereditary?
In about 5 to 10 percent of all cancer cases, hereditary factors play a significant role. This means that a predisposition to cancer runs in the family and can be passed down through DNA. Common types of cancer in which a hereditary predisposition may play a role include:
Breast cancer (e.g., BRCA1 or BRCA2 gene mutation)
Ovarian cancer
Colorectal cancer (e.g., Lynch syndrome or FAP)
Prostate Cancer
Melanoma (a type of skin cancer)
Do you have several family members with the same or related types of cancer, or were they diagnosed at a young age? If so, heredity may be a factor.
What does this mean for you?
If a genetic predisposition is suspected, a clinical geneticist can conduct an evaluation. This involves genetic testing, which often includes family history and DNA analysis. If such a predisposition is identified, it does not mean that you will definitely develop cancer. However, your risk is increased, and therefore early screening or preventive measures may be considered.
At Mauro, we can help you understand this information, brainstorm next steps with you, and guide you in making choices that are right for you.
Is cancer always hereditary?
No, in 90 to 95 percent of cases, cancer is not hereditary. Cancer usually develops due to a combination of factors, such as:
Age
Smoking
Alcohol consumption
Unhealthy diet
Overweight
Long-term exposure to harmful substances
Sometimes there is no clear cause or family history either.
